Each telescope has its imaging hourly rate displayed in real time in the launchpad before you login. At the end of each session you are also sent a detailed usage receipt which includes the costs, weather data, preview jpeg images and your observing session log file.

Mars Amongst the Clusters (Part II)

The track of Mars of the next few days as it passes some iconic clusters. The track is as seen from SSO at astronomical twilight. The large rectangle is the field of view of T12, the small that of T9.

The 5th and 6th sees Mars close to the magnitude 6  globular cluster M28, on the 8th it is closest to the 9th magnitue globular cluster NGC 6638 and on the 9th and 10th it is closest to the iconic magnitude 5 globular cluster M22.

The clusters and Mars are high enough from SSO to image from Astronomical twilight in the evening for around 3 hours. From Mayhill and T14 there is only a brief period around astronomical twilight where they are able to be imaged.

There will be several challenges imaging these clusters and Mars. Mars's brightness will prevent long exposures, and the waxing Moon is close by, a mere 6 degrees on the 9th, making even narrow-band imaging a challenge. However, the challenge will be worth it.

ALERT! Bright (Magnitude 6.9) Likely Galactic Nova

Location of the bright likely galactic nova in Lupus between the pointers and Antares as seen from SSO at Siding Spring in Australia looking west at 9:30 pm local time.  Visible only from the SSO scopes for around an hour after astronomical twilight, the latest astronomical telegram on 26/09/16 08:30 UT has the probable nova between 6.9 B and 6.3V. The Astronomical telegrams reported a bright probable nova ASASSN-16kt not far from epsilon Lupi at
RA 15:29:01.82, DEC -44:49:40.89 (J2000.0) at magnitude 9.1. The nova has rapdily brightened and is now almost unaided eye magnitude according to the latest astronomical telegram with its reported magnitude between between 6.9 B and 6.3V.

UPDATE: Nope definitely around magnitude 6 when I did proper estimates. On the other hand a quick and dirty visual estimate I just did suggested the nova was below mag 7, but then it was pretty low to the horizon at the time amongst the murk, but other dim stars were showing up.

ALERT! Bright (Magnitude 11) Galactic Nova

Location of the galactic Nova between Scorpius and Ophiuchus, between the Butterfly cluster and M62. The large rectangle is the field of view of iTelescope T12 the small that of T9. Click to embiggen.

An apparent nova of magnitude 11.4 has been detected in the direction of the galactic centre has been detected by the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae. Follow up observations are urgently required. J2000 coordinates are:

September Highlights: Comets C/2013 X1, 9P/Temple 1, 237P

New Moon is 1 September,  First Quarter 9 September,  Full Moon 17 September and Last Quarter Moon 23 September.

As in August several comets are visible this month, but only three are visible above the range of travel of iTelescope scopes and above magnitude 13.

Comet C/2013 X1 (PANSTARRS)  has dimmed substantially, but is still much brighter than predicted. Currently around magnitude 11, it will dim further during the month.

The comet will be visible from the SSO scopes. It does not rise far enough above the horizon from the northern hemisphere for the northern scopes to see it.

In the SSO scopes it is in reach of the scopes travel from astronomical twilight in the evening for about 2 hours, below is a more detailed rise, set and transit ephemeris from SSO.

The comet is in Hydra, but there are no particularly interesting or close encounters of the comet this month.

Comet 9P/Tempel 1 and comet 237P are in a good position for observation in Libra and the Scorpio.  They are visible from the southern scopes during the early evening with around a 2 hour window before the comets are too low for the scopes travel.

However, 9P comet is is substantially dimmer than ephemeris predictions of 11, the most recent estimate is 12.6 with the comet dimming it may be rather disappointing this year.

On the 5th-7th comet 9P is within 55' of the globular cluster NGC 5897 (magnitude 8.4), on the 27-29th it is close to the bright globular M4, brushing its outskirts on the 28th. Although by this time the comet will be quite dim and difficult to resolve against the bright globular cluster.

Comet 237P/Linear is currently much brighter than predicted (around magnitude 12.4 rather than 17.7), although it is ot likely to et much brighter than this. On the 19th it is around 13' from the 12th magnitude galaxy NGC 5897.

43P Wolf Harrington (magnitude 12) is low in the morning skies as seen from the northern scopes. It does not get within scope travel until astronomical twilight around the 11th though. On the 16th the comet will be 44' from the open cluster M67 (mag 6.9). At this time the comet is only 22 degrees above the eastern horizon at astronomical twilight in the morning, making this a difficult target.
